Vienna in one day: old town walking route

Vienna's old town is compact enough for a single day if you skip the trams and go everywhere on foot. The route starts at the cathedral in the centre, follows the pedestrian streets to the imperial palace and stops for lunch in a coffee house. In the afternoon it carries on past the opera to Karlsplatz and the market, and ends in the lanes behind the MuseumsQuartier. Schönbrunn and the Belvedere are best saved for a second day.

One day in Vienna: frequently asked questions

Can you see Vienna in one day?

The Innere Stadt with the cathedral, the Hofburg and the opera, plus Karlsplatz, yes. Schönbrunn, the Belvedere and the big museums need at least a second day.

Is St Stephen's tower worth climbing?

On a clear day, yes: from the South Tower you look out over the roofs of the old town. The climb is a narrow spiral staircase and there is little room at the top.
