Berlin in one day: Reichstag to the cathedral
A single day in Berlin fits into a narrow strip of Mitte: it starts at the Reichstag dome and ends at Hackescher Markt, and hardly any walk in between takes more than 15 minutes. The morning is about history and government, lunch is in the Nikolaiviertel, the afternoon belongs to Museum Island. The Wall, Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg need a second day.

Reichstag, Unter den Linden and Museum Island

Reichstag building
Walk the spiral ramp inside the glass dome all the way up. You only get in with an online registration with the Bundestag beforehand.

Walk through the gate from the west side onto Pariser Platz – something nobody could do until 1989.

Good to know
Book the dome early
The Bundestag hands out slots for the Reichstag dome online, often days ahead. Bring ID – there is a security check.
Timed museum tickets
The Neues Museum works with time slots. If you want to stay longer, do the cathedral first and let the museum run until closing.
If it rains
Stay longer on Museum Island: the Altes Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie are right next door.

One day in Berlin: frequently asked questions
Is one day enough for Berlin?
For the government quarter, Unter den Linden and Museum Island, yes. The Berlin Wall Memorial, the East Side Gallery and neighbourhoods like Kreuzberg need at least one more day.
Can I do the route without the U-Bahn?
Yes. From the Reichstag to Hackescher Markt it adds up to a little over 5 kilometres, spread across the whole day.
