Good to know
Best time to go
April to June and September to October are ideal. Summer is hot and the palaces are crowded. Advent, with its Christmas markets, is popular but cold. Museums and coffee houses work in any season.
Getting around
The Innere Stadt is easy on foot. The U-Bahn, trams and buses form a dense network and run late; buy tickets from machines or via the app – a day or weekly pass pays off quickly. The U4 goes to Schönbrunn.
Where to stay
Innere Stadt
The 1st district, between St. Stephen's, the Hofburg and the opera. Everything is walkable, but it costs more.
Neubau and Mariahilf
The 6th and 7th districts near the MuseumsQuartier and Naschmarkt, with cafés, shops and good U-Bahn links.

Vienna: frequently asked questions
Is the Vienna City Card worth it?
Mainly for public transport plus discounts. If you plan lots of museums, compare the Vienna Pass with single tickets – single tickets are often enough.
How do I get standing places at the State Opera?
Cheap standing places are sold for most performances, some online and some on site. The rules change – check the opera's website.
Are 3 days enough for Vienna?
For the classics, yes. With more time, add the wine taverns in Grinzing, the Danube Island or a trip to the Wachau valley.
When is the Naschmarkt open?
Monday to Saturday; it is closed on Sundays. On Saturdays there is also a flea market next to it.
