One day in Budapest: Buda and Pest on foot

Budapest is really two cities, and one day is enough for both. You start early in Buda on Castle Hill, walk down to the Danube and cross the Chain Bridge into Pest. Parliament, the riverside memorial and the Basilica sit so close together there that the afternoon needs no metro. The thermal bath and the Great Market Hall are saved for a second day.

  2. Matthias Church, Budapest

    · Sight

    Matthias Church

The glazed tile roof looks best from the square in front. Allow half an hour inside and check opening hours before you go.

    about 10 min on foot

  3. Buda Castle, Budapest

    · Sight

    Buda Castle

Walk through the courtyards to the terrace above the river. The National Gallery inside would take half a day – today the view is enough.

    about 5 min on foot

  4. Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Budapest

    · Sight

    Széchenyi Chain Bridge

Take the steps and paths down to Clark Ádám Square, then cross on foot. Halfway over you have the castle and Parliament in view at once.

    about 15 min on foot

  5. · Food & drink

    Hold Street Market Hall

The small downtown market hall: fruit and sausage downstairs, hot food stalls up on the gallery. Check opening hours before you go.

  7. · Sight

    Schuhe am Donauufer

A few minutes south along the embankment: iron shoes remember the people the Arrow Cross shot into the river here in 1944/45.

    about 10 min on foot

  8. St Stephen's Basilica, Budapest

    · Sight

    St Stephen's Basilica

A lift and a short flight of stairs take you up to the dome. From the top, Castle Hill sits right across from you.

    about 10 min on foot

  9. · Food & drink

    Gozsdu Courtyard

Dinner in the long passage in the Jewish Quarter, lined with restaurants side by side. The ruin bars are just around the corner.

Good to know

Ride up to Castle Hill

Bus 16 runs from Deák Ferenc tér across the Chain Bridge up into the Castle District. That saves the morning climb, and the rest of the route is downhill.

Book two things ahead

Parliament tours often sell out days in advance, and an online ticket for the Basilica dome is worth it too. Check opening hours on the official websites.

If you get a second day

Spend it on the Great Market Hall, Andrássy Avenue and an afternoon at the Széchenyi Baths in City Park.

One day in Budapest: frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Budapest?

For the classics on both sides of the Danube, yes: the Castle District, Chain Bridge, Parliament and the Basilica are all within walking distance. A thermal bath and the museums need more time.

Should I start in Buda or in Pest?

In Buda. Castle Hill is still quiet in the morning, and from there it is all downhill. Book the Parliament tour for early afternoon.
