Day 1
Market hall, tram and Margaret Island

Great Market Hall
Upstairs there is lángos, a fried flatbread almost every child likes. Downstairs, mountains of paprika to marvel at. Closed on Sundays.

Musical Fountain on Margaret Island
At the southern tip of the car-free island: in the warmer months the jets dance to music. Lawns all around for a picnic.

Margaret Island small animal park
A small enclosure with birds, goats and other animals, many found injured and nursed back. Quiet and easy to manage.

Japanese Garden
A small garden with a pond, a waterfall and fish. The kids count the koi while the grown-ups sit in the shade.

Eco playground on Margaret Island
A playground of wood and natural materials at the north end of the island. One last chance for the kids to run wild.

Day 2
The zoo and City Park

Budapest Zoo
One of the oldest zoos in the world, with an Art Nouveau elephant house and a petting zoo. Allow up to three hours; there are snack bars inside.

Playground in City Park
A playground on the edge of the park with lots to climb and slide on. Good for a picnic lunch break.

House of Music Hungary
Sounds to listen to and try out, in a building that looks like a canopy of leaves. Check opening hours before you go.

Vajdahunyad Castle
The fairy-tale castle stands by the lake: rowing boats in summer, often an ice rink in winter. A good way to end the day.

Good to know
Buggies and steps
Pest is flat, and Margaret Island and City Park have wide paths. Some metro stations only have stairs, while many trams are low-floor – staying above ground keeps things easy.
Toilets and breaks
The zoo, the House of Music and the market hall all have toilets, and there are public toilets in several places on the island. Some coins can be handy for paid toilets.
If it rains
Swap the island for the House of Music and the Museum of Fine Arts on Heroes' Square. For very young children, the Tropicarium in the south of the city is another option.

Yes, if you stay on the Pest side. It is flat there, and the island, the zoo and City Park have plenty of room to run around.

Many baths have age limits or special rules for children. Check the conditions on the bath's own website before you go.
