One day in Copenhagen – a walking route

Central Copenhagen is compact enough to cross on foot in a day. The route starts on the water at Nyhavn, follows the royal axis from Amalienborg to the Marble Church and then turns off to Rosenborg Castle. After lunch in the food halls it takes in two towers with views and ends at Tivoli, which is at its best after dark.

    Frederik's Church (Marble Church)

From the palace square the green dome lines up perfectly. A quick look into the round interior is worth it and free – on Fridays and Sundays it opens later.

Good to know

When Tivoli is closed

Out of season, stay in Nyhavn for the evening or cross the bridge to Christianshavn for dinner.

Rosenborg early

The castle is small, and its narrow rooms fill up around midday. A ticket bought ahead skips the queue. Check opening hours before you go.

On foot or by bike

The route is planned on foot. If you'd rather cycle, rent a bike – keep to the right and keep up the pace in the bike lanes.

One day in Copenhagen: frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Copenhagen?

For the centre with Nyhavn, the palaces, the towers and Tivoli, yes. The Little Mermaid, Christiania and trips up the coast need more time.

Why isn't the Little Mermaid on the route?

She sits a little out of the way to the north, and the round trip takes nearly an hour. If you want to see her, walk there along the water after Amalienborg and skip Rosenborg.
