Good to know
Best time to go
May, June and September are ideal: warm enough for the beach, but not as hot and crowded as July and August. Winters are mild and much quieter, but too cold for swimming.
Getting around
The old town and El Born are best on foot. For longer distances take the metro – it is fast and frequent. The ten-journey card pays off after just a few days. Watch your bags on crowded trains and on La Rambla.
Where to stay
Eixample
Wide streets, Modernisme buildings and good metro links. Central, but quieter than the old town.
El Born
Old town with lanes, bars and small shops, close to the beach. Lively at night – not for early sleepers.

Barcelona: frequently asked questions
Do I need to book Gaudí tickets in advance?
Yes, for Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà buy timed tickets online. On the day they are often sold out.
Are 3 days enough for Barcelona?
For the old town, Gaudí and Montjuïc, yes. With more time, add Gràcia, Tibidabo or a trip to Montserrat.
Is Barcelona safe?
Barcelona is safe, but pickpockets are common on La Rambla, on the metro and at the beach. Carry valuables in front and don't leave anything unattended on the beach.
When is the Magic Fountain show on?
The Font Màgica only runs on certain evenings and takes breaks in winter. The current dates are on the city's website.
