In February winter is far from over in northern Europe, but the days are already noticeably longer and many families have a half-term or winter break. That makes February the month for short escapes: a long weekend in Morocco, a week in the Canaries or ten days long-haul – while carnival is celebrated at home, or precisely to celebrate it somewhere warm. We looked at the weather of the Februaries 2015 to 2024 for 20 destinations.

The good news: at most places February is already a little warmer than January. On the Red Sea and in the Gulf temperatures climb noticeably, and Thailand and Goa are in the driest part of their year.

Short breaks up to 4 hours: Morocco and Málaga

For a long weekend, Marrakech is ideal in February: 21 °C by day is perfect for the souks, gardens and palaces, which are hard to bear at over 38 °C in summer. Nights are cold at 7 °C, though – pack warm clothes for the evenings. If you want the sea as well, head for the coast: Agadir is similarly warm by day at 21.8 °C but much milder at night.

Málaga is no summer destination at 17.3 °C, but at 3 hours' flight it is a quick escape from the grey. In February the city is pleasantly quiet, and on sunny days you can sit outside at lunchtime.

Your home mobile plan often does not cover roaming outside Europe. For Morocco a travel eSIM is worth it:

Carnival in the sun – or a quiet escape

If you like carnival but not in sleet, you can find it in the warmth too. The carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the largest in the world and usually falls in February, depending on the date of Easter; Funchal on Madeira also celebrates with a big parade, and in Mindelo on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente carnival is the most important festival of the year. The exact dates are on the cities' official websites – accommodation in Santa Cruz books up early for carnival week.

If you are after peace and quiet instead, southern Gran Canaria (21.6 °C, 24 mm of rain) or the west coast of Tenerife around Los Gigantes are good choices. The Tenerife values in the table are for Santa Cruz in the north-east; the south and west of the island are usually sunnier and drier.

Egypt and the Gulf: 22 to 26 degrees, hardly any rain

On the Red Sea February is noticeably warmer than January. Sharm el-Sheikh reaches 23.6 °C, Hurghada 21.7 °C, and almost no rain falls. Luxor is the warmest place within a short flight at 24.6 °C by day and 0 mm of rain – February is one of the best times for temples, tombs and a Nile cruise, before the heat arrives from April.

Oman (25.9 °C) and Dubai (25.2 °C) are at their best in February: warm enough for the beach, comfortable enough for desert tours and city walks. At just over 18 °C, nights in Muscat are much milder than in Dubai.

Long-haul: Thailand, Goa, the Maldives and the Caribbean

With ten days or more, February catches many long-haul places at their driest. Goa averages 0 mm of rain at almost 32 °C, Phuket 29 mm at 31 °C, and Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok are very dry too. On the Maldives, February is the driest month of the year with 46 mm.

Southern Sri Lanka still averages 110 mm, much less than in December. In the Caribbean, Barbados (25 mm) and Havana (27 mm) are about as dry as they get in February; Cuba is a little fresher at night (20 °C) than the islands further east.
