Best time to go
May to June and September to October are ideal: warm enough to swim but less crowded. July and August are often above 30 °C, with many cruise passengers. Winters are mild, but many boats don't run.
Getting around
The old town is car-free, so you walk everywhere, often up steps. City buses link the Pile Gate, Gruž and Lapad; buy tickets at kiosks, from the driver or via the app. A shuttle bus runs to the airport, about 30 minutes.
Where to stay
Old town
Inside the walls and at its best in the evening. Lots of steps, little room for suitcases, and fairly expensive.
Ploče
On the hillside east of the old town, with sea views and close to Banje Beach. The old town is a few minutes' walk away.

Dubrovnik: frequently asked questions
Are 3 days enough for Dubrovnik?
Yes, for the old town, Lokrum and one trip. With more time, add the Elaphiti Islands, Ston or Kotor in Montenegro.
When is the old town least crowded?
Early in the morning and in the evening. During the day many cruise passengers arrive, especially in summer.
Is the city walls walk worth it?
Yes – from up there you see the whole old town and the sea. Take water and sun protection, and go early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
How do I get from the airport into town?
A shuttle bus timed to flights runs to the Pile Gate and the bus station in Gruž. Taxis are available but cost much more.
